The written history of the Galapagos is dated to 1535 when Fray Tomas de Berlanga was sent by Spain to do some "trouble shooting" in Peru. In his search for fresh water his crew land on a group of islands. He wrote, "the abundance of many seals, turtles, iguanas, tortoises and many birds like that of Spain. However it is rather silly that they do not know how to flee and that many were caught in the hand." Years to follow the islands became a haven for pirates, buccaneers and whalers for a stock up station of food, normally tortoise meat. It is said that from 1811 to 1844 that over 20,000 tortoises were killed and removed for this purpose.
On September 15, 1835 on the Voyage of the Beagle, Charles Darwin made a detailed account of what he saw, being impressed by their volcanic nature; their benign climate, being under the equator, and their flora and fauna. He wrote: "The natural history of the archipelago is very remarkable; it seems to be a little world by itself; the great number of its inhabitants, both vegetable and animal, being found nowhere else".
